This book tells many stories told by Roger S. Silook. He talks about the battles between newly moved Islanders and people from Siberia. Also, about competitions between mainlanders of Alaska and Siberian Yupiks from St. Lawerence Island and Russia. Competitions between magicians, strong men wrestling, and death matches. Apart from the people, he talks about the tools they used for hunting, and animals on the Island. The author, Roger, also talks about how the Siberian Yupik people lived off the Island and the Bering Sea.

This is a book with many stories told by elders on St. Lawrence that are now deceased. In it is the famous traditional Eskimo saying, "Aatak aygumun angwaghtek" meaning "Keep paddling against the wind or ocean current." The storytellers are Theodore Kingeekuk (Kingikaq), Dorothy Waghiyi (Puughhun), Ronald Kingeekuk (Mekeneghsi), Nathan Noongwook (Qagughmii), Lloyd Oovi (Uvi), Jimmy Toolie (Tulii), Elsie Kava (Imegyuun), Ruby Rookok (Nuughnaq), Bobby Kava (Kaava), Herbert Kiyuklook (Ggayeglluk), Nelson Alowa (Qagaqu), and Clifford Annogiyuk (Siftuun). The stories are written in both Siberian Yupik and english. Theodore, Dorothy, Ronald, and Nathan talk about how life in Savoonga used to be. Lloyd, Jimmy, ad Elsie talk about Reindeer Herding, Ronald, Ruby, Bobby, Herbert,and Nelson talk about the history and Siberian Yupik custom. The last stories are told by Dorothy, Ronald, Nathan, and Clifford about stories they were told about. Also contained in the book are maps and very nice photographs.

During the UAA Thanksgiving break, Aaron found a beached whale at a camp called Tapghapagaq. As most people know, Siberian Yupiks are one of the native groups that hunt for bowhead whales as a source of food. As he walked closer to it, he recognized it as a humpback whale without a tongue. He said, "The tongue was missing which means a killer whale killed it. Whales just don't die by themselves."

This website is full of information based on the history of traditional tattoos. There are also pictures of elders with traditional face tattoos and arm tattoos. Tattooing became practically extinct on St. Lawrence Island upon the arrival of missionaries and the modern lifestyle. It was also said that some were happy not to get the tattoos, however, others felt shameful as it is part of tradition.
